To increase the efficient recovery of recyclables within their picking station at their Nutts Corner facility in Co. Antrim, McKinstry wanted to upgrade their shredder to produce a coarser, more manageable-sized product. McKinstry went to market to research their options.
In May 2021, McKinstry purchased a used TYRON 2000XL 2.0 with a 7/7-4 shaft configuration from Southern Ireland, a deal facilitated by our late colleague, Damian Casey (RIP). Already aware of the HAAS TYRON’s benefits, McKinstry was keen to see the newly introduced 6/6-4 shaft configuration, HAAS’ coarser shredder option.
In addition to this, McKinstry had previous experience dealing with CRJ Services and HAAS Recycling Systems GmbH. In August 2021, McKinstry acquired RTD Crawford’s wood recycling business in Belfast. RTD Crawford was a long-time CRJ Services and HAAS customer. This site, now McKinstry Biomass, operates a static HAAS wood recycling plant purchased in October 2010 and extended in September 2012, which currently processes circa 25,000 tonnes of grade A wood per year.
Following the purchase of their static HAAS plant, RTD Crawford purchased a mobile HAAS TYRON slow-speed shredder in October 2018 to break down the bulk of their material before processing through the static plant. In April 2019, RTD Crawford approached CRJ Services again to purchase a Steelweld ECS1500 Eddy Current Separator to extract ferrous and non-ferrous metals from their material stream.
Unique within the shredder market, the 6/6-4 shaft configuration produces a coarser shredded product (sub 400mm), with the performance and reliability synonymous with the HAAS TYRON series of slow-speed shredders. This coarser particle size allows for more efficient picking of reclaimable commodities. This benefit was clear to see when CRJ Services took Darren McKinstry – Director, and Aaron Rainey – Site Manager, to view a TYRON 6/6-4 working at Kemp Waste in Halifax. Impressed with the performance and shredded product being produced, McKinstry completed the purchase of their new TYRON 6/6-4 and took delivery in late January 2023.
This purchase was particularly significant for both CRJ Services and McKinstry as the initial consultation and groundwork had been performed by the late Damian Casey – a hugely respected CRJ colleague and friend of the team at McKinstry. Damian had facilitated the McKinstry purchase from southern Ireland, sold the HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0 to RTD Crawford, along with the Steelweld Strobe, and had been in discussion with McKinstry regarding a courser shredder since early 2019. He also sold the UK’s first 6/6-4 configured HAAS to Kemp Waste in Halifax.
In honour of Damian, a plaque bearing his name was installed on the McKinstry machine to commemorate his immense contribution.
“Damian put this deal on a plate for us, and we thought it was only appropriate to return the favour.”
– Rob Symons, Director at CRJ Services Ltd.
“We started discussing our requirement with Damian Casey and CRJ Services in late 2019. Typical of Damian’s form, all his guarantees regarding throughput, sizing and performance have come to fruition. We are more than pleased with the machine and would highly recommend HAAS and CRJ Services to the market.”
– Aaron Rainey, Site Manager at McKinstry Skip Hire.
