Binn Group Enhances SRF Production with Weima Powerline Shredder

Binn Group is Scotland’s leading independent provider of integrated recycling and resource management services. Their operations focus on recycling, reuse, waste minimisation, landfill diversion, and environmental improvement. With Scottish waste regulations mandating that by 2025 only 5% of waste may be sent to landfill, Binn Group is making significant strides to achieve this ambitious target.

At their materials recycling facility, a wide variety of recyclable materials are separated, graded, baled, and sent to re-processors, resulting in over 86% of materials being transformed into useful commodities. The remaining 14% is processed into SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel), generating electricity and power while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Shredding for SRF Production

To produce high-quality SRF, the unrecyclable material is first shredded to 250–300mm using a HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0 shredder, previously supplied by CRJ Services. Once shredded, the material is dried to approximately 15% moisture and loaded into a hopper via telehandler to begin the main processing journey.

The waste stream first passes through a long part separator, which removes fibrous materials. Next, it enters a Nihot density separator, which uses powerful fans to blow light material onto the next stage, while heavy fractions fall onto a separate conveyor for manual recovery of recyclables.

Light materials then pass through a picking station, where trained staff remove non-conforming items such as PVC and cardboard. The remaining material is processed under over-band and eddy current magnets, removing ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Finally, the material is fed into a high-speed shredder, which reduces it to approximately 40mm before being baled, wrapped, and stored for shipment. The finished SRF is exported to Denmark for use as an alternative fuel in cement kilns.

The Need for Reliability

Over the years, Binn Group had used several high-speed shredders for the final stage, but each fell short on reliability, causing costly downtime. They required a static high-speed shredder that could:

• Reduce 250–300mm material to 40mm consistently
• Produce a uniform product at the required tonnage per hour
• Match or improve on the energy efficiency of previous machines

Having previously purchased the HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0 pre-shredder from CRJ Services, Binn Group returned to CRJ for a solution.

CRJ Services’ Solution: Weima Powerline

Following site visits and consultations, CRJ recommended the Weima Powerline shredder, a universal single-shaft static shredder capable of handling a wide variety of input materials—ideal for SRF production.
