The Toughest Talk
“I’m fine.”
Two simple words – and often the hardest ones to challenge.
Because of this, CRJ have chosen to strengthen its approach to mental health across the business. Because to us, mental health deserves the same attention, structure and visibility as physical health.
In our industry, we talk openly about safety. PPE, machine guarding, safe systems of work – they are second nature. But mental wellbeing can be less visible and harder to address. That’s something we’re committed to changing.
Investing in Mental Health First Aid
This month, we’re proud to announce that Ali Wennell and Deon Swanepoel have joined Simon Heywood as certified Mental Health First Aiders after completing their Level 3 training with St John Ambulance.
This qualification equips them to:
- Recognise the signs of poor mental health
- Provide initial support and reassurance
- Signpost colleagues to professional help where needed
- Help reduce stigma through open, informed conversations
Having three trained Mental Health First Aiders across the business means there are now multiple approachable, confidential points of contact for our team. It reinforces that support is not hidden – it’s available, visible and proactive.
Creating Space for Honest Conversations
Training is just one part of the journey.
To help keep the conversation moving, Simon will also be hosting a session titled “Men’s Health – The BIG Issues” — designed to create a safe and honest space to talk about topics that are often left unsaid.
In sectors like ours, conversations around mental health – particularly men’s mental health – can still feel uncomfortable. But avoiding the conversation doesn’t make the challenges disappear.
Creating space for openness does.

Why This Matters to Us
Mental health affects everyone – whether directly or indirectly. Colleagues, friends, families. It doesn’t discriminate by role, experience or industry.
By strengthening our mental health framework, we’re not just responding to an issue – we’re building a culture where wellbeing is part of everyday business.
Because sometimes the toughest talk is simply asking, “Are you really okay?”
And then being ready to listen.
