CRJ Services Supplies Metal Extraction Solution to Binn Group’s Ecopark Operations

Binn Group Ltd, based in Perthshire, is Scotland’s largest independent provider of recycling and waste management services. Delivering a fully integrated range of waste solutions, Binn specialises in the collection, processing and transformation of waste into reusable resources across commercial, industrial and municipal sectors.

Expanding Recycling Infrastructure at Binn Ecopark

In 2014, Binn Group took a strategic step by closing its landfill site and expanding its Binn Ecopark facility. This investment enabled the business to diversify its operations and significantly increase its recycling capacity.

The Ecopark now incorporates two Material Reclamation Facilities (MRFs) processing commercial, industrial and municipal waste, a 30,000-tonne-per-annum food waste anaerobic digestion facility, in-vessel and green-waste composting operations, a residual waste Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) facility, and dedicated waste wood processing and storage areas.

A significant proportion of the waste processed at the site is received through Binn Group’s skip hire operations, along with collection and site clearance services provided to the construction sector.

Producing High-Quality Recycled Aggregates

Material generated through these streams is processed within Binn Group’s MRFs, where recoverable commodities such as cardboard, plastics and wood are separated, graded and baled for onward reprocessing.

The remaining aggregate material is repurposed back into the construction sector, commonly used as sub-base for buildings or in road construction applications. To meet quality requirements for these uses, the aggregate must be free from contamination — particularly residual ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Identifying the Right Metal Separation Solution

Having worked with CRJ Services for several years, Stuart Smith, Operations Director at Binn Group, approached the CRJ team to identify a solution capable of removing both ferrous and non-ferrous metals from a mid-sized aggregate fraction.

Following consultation with Damian Casey, Sales Manager at CRJ Services, the Steelweld Strobe was identified as the most suitable solution to meet Binn Group’s operational and quality requirements.

Deploying the Steelweld Strobe Eddy Current Separator

The Steelweld Strobe is a mobile Eddy Current Separator designed to extract metals from a wide range of waste material streams. It combines a rare earth drum magnet for ferrous metal removal with a Master Magnets Eddy Current Separator to eject non-ferrous metals such as aluminium.

One of the defining features of the Strobe is its low infeed height, allowing it to be fed directly from upstream processing equipment such as trommel screens or deck screeners. This makes it well suited to integration within existing processing lines without extensive reconfiguration.

The Strobe can be powered either by its onboard 65kW generator or via a mains electrical connection, offering operational flexibility to suit different site requirements.

Supporting Quality, Compliance and Resource Recovery

By introducing the Steelweld Strobe into its processing operation, Binn Group has enhanced its ability to produce clean, metal-free aggregate suitable for reuse within the construction sector. The solution supports Binn’s wider commitment to maximising resource recovery, improving material quality and reducing waste sent for disposal.

The project further reflects CRJ Services’ experience in supplying specialist separation equipment to complex recycling operations, supporting customers as they continue to invest in sustainable and efficient waste processing infrastructure.
