“CRJ Services’ HAAS TYRON shredders are being used within our Yorkshire region at Dewsbury and York. This came with huge recommendations for this equipment, and it did not disappoint.”

HAAS TYRON Shredder Supports Waste Processing at Biffa’s Salmon Pastures Facility
Biffa operates a commercial waste collection depot at its Salmon Pastures facility in Sheffield. Following the recent acquisition of the site from Viridor, Biffa required a robust slow-speed shredder to process incoming waste collections efficiently and reliably.
With a long-standing working relationship already in place, CRJ Services was approached to support the new operation. Having supplied a wide range of material processing equipment to Biffa sites across the UK, CRJ Services recommended the HAAS TYRON slow-speed shredder as a proven solution for the demands of the Salmon Pastures facility.
Proven Performance Across the Region
The HAAS TYRON was already in operation within Biffa’s Yorkshire region, including sites at Dewsbury and York, where the machine had built a strong reputation for performance and reliability. These existing installations played a key role in the decision-making process for the Salmon Pastures depot.
Once installed on site, the TYRON was tasked with processing a wide variety of incoming waste streams, requiring consistent throughput and dependable performance across differing material types.
Handling Challenging Waste Streams
Following several weeks of operation, the HAAS TYRON demonstrated its capability in handling materials that had previously caused challenges.
“This shredder performs unlike anything I’ve seen before. Our previous machine struggled with certain materials, but the TYRON shreds 99% of our material. It’s a great money saver on landfill diversion,” explained Anthony Gaughan, Depot Manager at Biffa Salmon Pastures.
The ability to process a broad range of waste materials effectively has helped maximise diversion from landfill, improving both operational efficiency and overall cost control at the facility.

Service Support That Keeps Operations Moving
Alongside machine performance, ongoing service and support has been a key factor in the success of the hire. CRJ Services operates a nationwide team of field-based heavy plant engineers, strategically located across the UK and Ireland to respond quickly to customer requirements.
This field support is backed by the CRJ Support Desk, which can diagnose many issues remotely and ensure engineers arrive on site with the correct tools and parts, minimising downtime and disruption.
“The service received, albeit over a short amount of time, has been great. No complaints. Turnaround time has been outstanding when we have needed assistance,” added Anthony.
Minimising Downtime with the CRJ Swing Program
A further benefit of long-term shredder hire through CRJ Services is the company’s Swing Program. When a hired shredder is due to be hard-faced, CRJ Services replaces the machine with a like-for-like unit, allowing the customer’s operation to continue uninterrupted while the original shredder is removed for off-site maintenance.
This approach ensures consistent shredder performance throughout the hire period while eliminating the downtime typically associated with hard-facing work.
Delivering Reliable Solutions for Major Waste Operators
“It has been excellent to see another HAAS TYRON set up and performing on a Biffa site. It has been a pleasure to deal with Anthony and his team, and it’s great to hear such positive feedback on both our machinery and service levels,” said Damian Casey, Sales Manager at CRJ Services Ltd.
The installation of the HAAS TYRON at Biffa’s Salmon Pastures depot reinforces CRJ Services’ ability to deliver dependable machinery solutions, supported by responsive service and innovative hire programmes, to major waste operators across the UK.
