Recognising Earth Hour

CRJ Hosts a Biodiversity Day

Every year, millions of people across the world take part in Earth Hour, a global movement encouraging individuals, communities and businesses to switch off and reflect on the importance of protecting our planet.

At CRJ Services, we believe sustainability is not just an industry responsibility. That’s why this year, instead of simply marking the hour, we dedicated a full day to making a practical impact close to home.

Why Doing Our Bit Matters

As a business operating in the forestry, waste and recycling sectors, environmental responsibility is part of our daily work. We see first-hand how resource management, land use and material recovery affect the wider ecosystem.

Biodiversity underpins everything. Healthy ecosystems support cleaner air and water, stronger soil, wildlife habitats and more resilient communities. Even small initiatives like planting flowers, creating habitats or improving green spaces, all ccontribute to a bigger environmental picture.

Launching the CRJ Wellness Trail

The day also marked the official launch of the CRJ Wellness Trail – an outdoor space designed to encourage staff to step away from their desks, get fresh air and enjoy the natural surroundings around our site.

The trail reflects our belief that wellbeing and environment go hand in hand. A healthy team thrives in a healthy environment.

What Each Team Delivered

To make the day meaningful, our teams were split into groups, each focusing on a different biodiversity or improvement project across the site.

Habitat Team – Building Bug Hotels

The first team focused on creating natural habitats by building bug hotels using pallets and material from our site. These structures provide shelter for insects, all vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems.

By using recycled materials, the team also reinforced our core principle of resourcefulness and reuse.

Planting Team – Flowers and Bulbs

Another group dedicated their time to planting flowers and seasonal bulbs around the site. These additions not only brighten the environment visually but also create valuable feeding grounds for pollinators throughout the year.

Small planting initiatives can have a surprisingly large impact on biodiversity when sustained over time.

Lakeside Improvement Team – Enhancing Green Space

Our lakeside seating area was refreshed and improved to create a more welcoming and usable outdoor space for staff.

By maintaining and enhancing this area, we’re encouraging more time spent outdoors while also supporting a healthier local micro-ecosystem around the water’s edge.

Reclaimed Materials Team – Pallet Furniture (CRJ Style)

Staying true to our industry roots, one team designed and built unique outdoor furniture using recycled pallets.

This project combined creativity with sustainability – demonstrating how materials that might otherwise be discarded can be repurposed into something functional and long-lasting.

A Team Effort — Finished the Right Way

After a full day of hands-on work, the team came together to celebrate with well-earned pizza and refreshments.

Biodiversity Day wasn’t just about improving our surroundings — it was about strengthening teamwork, encouraging collaboration and reinforcing our shared values as a business.

Looking Ahead

Our Biodiversity Day is just one example of how CRJ Services is committed to making a positive contribution beyond our core operations.

Environmental responsibility isn’t a one-day initiative — it’s an ongoing commitment.

By taking practical action, investing in our people and improving our own surroundings, we’re proud to play our part — however small — in building a more sustainable future.
