CRJ Services and Air Spectrum Deliver Dust Suppression Solution at Biffa Dewsbury

Biffa Dewsbury, part of Biffa Waste Management Services, operates at the forefront of the UK’s waste and recycling sector. As the country’s leading provider of integrated waste management solutions, Biffa delivers essential services across waste processing, household waste management, and commercial waste streams, underpinned by a strong commitment to sustainability and compliance.

At the Dewsbury site, the shredding of bulky household items — including upholstered furniture such as sofas — presents a growing operational and environmental challenge. Many of these products contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), which are toxic, carcinogenic, and invisible to the naked eye. When released as dust during shredding, POPs pose a risk to both human health and the wider environment.

In response, the Environment Agency has introduced stricter legislation governing the handling, storage, and disposal of POP-containing furniture. This has increased the need for proven, compliant dust suppression solutions that can be implemented directly at source.

A Proactive Approach to Compliance

Working in collaboration with Air Spectrum, CRJ Services set out to explore a practical and effective method of suppressing shredder dust at source. Taking an innovative and proactive approach, CRJ identified an opportunity to trial the JetStream Smartech dust suppression system alongside a HAAS Tyron 2000 XL 2.0 slow-speed shredder at the Biffa Dewsbury facility.

The trial focused on controlling airborne dust generated during the shredding of household furniture, ensuring compliance with the latest POPs legislation while maintaining operational efficiency.

The JetStream Smartech Trial

For the trial, the HAAS Tyron 2000 XL 2.0 was fitted with nine JetStream nozzles, strategically positioned to target dust at the point of generation. The system produces a fine, controlled mist with droplet sizes between 15 and 50 microns, designed to suppress dust particles — including POP-laden dust — without oversaturating material or impacting throughput.

Installed directly at the shredder, the JetStream system worked in real time, controlling dust as it was produced rather than attempting to manage it after release. The result was a visibly cleaner operating environment and improved control over hazardous dust emissions.

How JetStream Works

The Air Spectrum JetStream Smartech is an intelligently controlled, compressed-air misting system capable of managing multiple nozzles across different zones. Using advanced PCB technology, the system precisely controls airflow and mist output to match operational requirements.
