John F Hunt Delivers Successful Landfill Remediation at Nottingham ‘New Horizons’ Development with CRJ Services

John F Hunt has been appointed as the primary contractor for the remediation of the former Imperial Tobacco factory site in Nottingham, a complex brownfield development constructed on historic landfill. The project forms part of the ‘New Horizons’ development, led by Henry Boot Developments, which will see the remediated site transformed into a series of new warehouse buildings.

As part of the remediation process, contaminated landfill material needed to be processed, segregated, and cleaned to allow suitable material to be retained and reused within the site. To achieve this, John F Hunt hired a suite of material processing equipment from CRJ Services, enabling efficient separation of waste streams while minimising off-site disposal.

Specialist Expertise in Land Remediation

John F Hunt is a group of 18 companies specialising in engineering and plant hire services within the construction industry. One of its core divisions, John F Hunt Regeneration, focuses on land remediation, including the cleansing and stabilisation of contaminated land.

For the Nottingham project, accuracy, efficiency, and compliance were critical. The ability to retain cleaned material on site for reuse not only reduced waste sent off site but also supported the sustainability objectives of the wider development.

Designing the Right Processing Solution

During the planning phase, Cameron Enticott, Site Manager for John F Hunt Regeneration, approached CRJ Services to develop a machinery solution tailored to the project’s requirements. Having worked together previously, Cameron was confident in CRJ’s ability to deliver a reliable and effective setup.

Rob Symons, Director at CRJ Services, attended site during the planning stage to assess material characteristics, understand desired outcomes, and design an efficient processing flow.

The Processing Setup

Following the site visit, CRJ Services proposed a multi-stage screening and picking solution to accurately segregate landfill material into recoverable fractions.

Raw landfill material was first loaded into a McCloskey R155 deck screener, fitted with 75mm finger decks. This initial screening stage separated the material into two streams:

• Sub-75mm material, which was fed into a Doppstadt SM620 trommel screener fitted with a 20mm drum
• +75mm oversize material, which followed a separate processing route

The Doppstadt SM620 screened out the sub-20mm fine fraction, while the 20–75mm fraction continued onto the first Kiverco picking station. Operators manually removed impurities such as plastic, wood, and rubber, leaving a clean fill material.

This cleaned material was then reused on site, placed in 300mm layers and compacted in accordance with highways specification, ready for the next phase of construction.

The +75mm oversize material from the McCloskey R155 was directed to a second picking station, where remaining contaminants were removed, again producing clean material suitable for on-site reuse.

The carefully designed processing solution enabled a significant volume of material to remain on site, reducing haulage, disposal costs, and environmental impact.
