Kemp Waste Management Boosts Recycling Efficiency with HAAS TYRON Shredding Solution

Kemp Waste Management Ltd (KWM) is a family-owned waste management business based in Halifax, with over 20 years of experience serving customers across West Yorkshire and Manchester. Operating the Balkram Edge Recycling Centre, KWM provides skip hire and waste tipping services to a broad customer base, ranging from major construction firms to smaller contractors and residential clients.

Handling a diverse mix of waste streams, KWM places strong emphasis on reclaiming and recycling materials wherever possible, reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill and improving overall sustainability.

Investment in a High-Capacity Recycling Plant

In April 2020, KWM took a major step forward by investing in a static material recycling plant designed to improve processing efficiency and material recovery. The plant comprises a Kiverco KL 820 trommel screen fitted with a 20mm drum, a four-bay picking station, and a density separator.

Initially, two excavators were used to pre-sort and reduce the size of incoming waste. However, as throughput increased, it became clear that this approach could not keep pace with the capacity of the new plant. A more efficient solution was required to ensure material was presented correctly for downstream processing.

The Challenge: Consistent Sizing for Manual Picking

KWM needed a slow-speed shredder capable of producing a coarse, consistent particle size that would allow operatives to efficiently recover materials such as wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals at the picking station. The machine also needed to deliver sufficient throughput to enable the static plant to operate at full capacity.

Having previously hired trommel screens and density separators from CRJ Services, KWM approached the team to discuss a suitable shredding solution.

The Solution: HAAS TYRON with 6-6/4 Shaft Configuration

As the UK dealer for HAAS Recycling-Systems GmbH, CRJ Services proposed the HAAS TYRON slow-speed shredder fitted with a 6-6/4 shaft configuration. This setup consists of six shredding discs on each twin shaft, with four shredding teeth per disc.

This configuration produces a coarse shredded product of sub-400mm, making it particularly well suited to applications where reclaimable materials are manually picked from the waste stream.

“This configuration provides KWM with a coarse shredded product compared with the finer material produced by the 7-7/4 and 9-9/4 shaft configurations. It’s a popular solution for customers who want to manually pick valuable commodities thanks to the larger particle size,” Kiefer Morgan, Area Sales Manager, CRJ Services Ltd

With 25 HAAS TYRON machines operating within CRJ Services’ hire fleet, CRJ was able to supply a demonstration machine to KWM. This allowed the team at Balkram Edge to see first-hand how the shredder performed with their material, producing the required particle size at a throughput of 30 tonnes per hour.

From Demonstration to Investment

Following the successful trial, KWM proceeded to purchase a HAAS TYRON 2000 XL 2.0 with a 6-6/4 shaft configuration in February 2022.

Ash Crowther, Site Manager at Kemp Waste Management Ltd, commented: “We have been delighted with the performance of the HAAS TYRON. It produces the right size material for our picking station without reducing the size too much.”

Optimising the Waste Stream

Once shredded, material passes through the trommel screen where the sub-20mm fine fraction is removed. The remaining 20–400mm material is fed into the picking line, allowing operatives to recover valuable commodities.

After manual picking, the residual material is processed through density separators, where it is split into light and heavy fractions. The light fraction is sent as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to a local waste-to-energy facility, while the heavy fraction is further processed and cleaned for reuse as recycled hardcore material.

A Proven Solution for High-Throughput Recycling

By integrating the HAAS TYRON 2000 XL 2.0 into their operation, Kemp Waste Management has enhanced throughput, improved material recovery, and ensured their recycling plant operates at maximum efficiency. The project highlights the value of correctly sized shredding solutions and the importance of real-world demonstrations when investing in processing equipment.
