The Jenz HEM 593 Z is an ideal solution for Quill Energy because it gives them the flexibility to chip across a wide range of applications without compromising on quality. Being the first new JENZ machine sold by CRJ into Ireland makes this a particularly important project for us, and the D1 rotor plays a key role in delivering the consistently high chip quality their operation demands.

Quill Energy Invests in Performance and Reliability with Jenz
Founded in 2018, Quill Energy Ltd has quickly established itself as a trusted operator within the biomass and composting sector. As demand for high-quality biomass fuel has grown, so too has the need for reliable, efficient machinery capable of maintaining output without compromise. Consistent performance has been central to Quill Energy’s success, driving continued investment in equipment that supports both productivity and quality.
Building the Fleet
Quill Energy’s journey with CRJ Services began with a pragmatic and cost-effective approach. Their first major investment was a used Jenz BA 725, sourced and fully overhauled by CRJ’s experienced workshop team. This provided Quill with robust, dependable chipping capacity while keeping capital expenditure accessible.
As the business expanded, so did its processing requirements. To enhance material screening capabilities, Quill Energy trialled a trommel screener on hire. Following a successful trial period that demonstrated clear operational benefits, the machine was purchased outright – a decision rooted in real-world performance rather than speculation.
Throughout this growth, the relationship between Quill Energy and CRJ Services has been built on trust, proven machinery performance, and ongoing support through quality parts supply and refurbished equipment.

Operational Challenges
Operating in demanding biomass processing environments presents a unique set of challenges. For Quill Energy, these centred around three key areas:
- Equipment reliability, ensuring maximum uptime in high-throughput conditions
- Efficient sizing, producing consistent G100 and G50 chip to meet the requirements of multiple end users
- Scalability, with machinery capable of supporting increasing volumes as the business continues to grow
Addressing these challenges required a machine that could deliver consistent quality while remaining flexible and future-proof.
The Solution: Jenz HEM 593 Z
Renowned for their performance, durability, and efficiency, Jenz chippers have long been a benchmark within the biomass industry. With Quill Energy’s requirements in mind, Mike Symons, Head of Sales at CRJ Services, recommended the Jenz HEM 593 Z — a machine ideally suited to producing high-quality wood chip while supporting long-term operational growth.
Since commissioning the Jenz HEM 593 Z, Quill Energy has experienced tangible benefits across productivity, quality, and ease of operation.
A hydraulic blower with adjustable speeds enables seamless loading into containers, while the D1.3 rotor delivers optimal chip quality and simplified maintenance access. The machine’s 1400mm-wide infeed and aggressive intake comfortably handle timber up to 560mm in diameter, ensuring consistent throughput even with challenging material.
Switching between G100 and G50 chip sizes is straightforward thanks to the hydraulic opening screen and pre-grips, allowing operators to adapt quickly to changing customer demands. Inside the cab, the easy2 touchscreen control system provides intuitive setup and rapid adjustments, contributing to high operator satisfaction and confidence.
Ongoing Support and a Milestone Delivery
CRJ Services continues to support Quill Energy with comprehensive aftersales care, including scheduled servicing, parts supply, reactive breakdown support, and lifetime access to specialist technical advice.
The delivery of the Jenz HEM 593 Z also marks a significant milestone — it is the first new Jenz chipper delivered into Ireland, reinforcing both Quill Energy’s commitment to investing in best-in-class machinery and CRJ’s role in supporting the evolving biomass sector.
