Hadfield Wood Recyclers – Enhancing Throughput and Material Quality with the HAAS Tyron Background

Hadfield Wood Recyclers (Enva Ltd) is one of the oldest and largest wood recyclers in the UK. With over 38 years of experience, Hadfield handle wood waste for national and international waste management companies, local authorities, and other public sector bodies.

Hadfield operate three main sites within the UK—Manchester, Middlesbrough, and Tilbury—processing vast quantities of waste wood. This wood is recycled into over 20 sustainable products, including wood fibre bedding, or sent to biomass facilities as fuel.

At their Tilbury facility, Hadfield process thousands of tonnes of waste wood every week. The raw material undergoes a multi-stage process, where consistent particle size is crucial for the efficiency of subsequent stages, particularly the manual picking station, which forms the third stage of the recovery process.

The Challenge

To improve the quality of their recovered material, Hadfield needed to refine their pre-shredding process. Their existing machine, a Hammel 750, struggled to produce a consistent particle size at the required throughput of 40 tonnes per hour (TPH).

This presented several operational challenges:

• The pre-shredder is the first stage in a multi-stage process; inconsistent particle size could reduce efficiency downstream.
• The picking station required a uniform flow of material to expose all foreign objects and impurities.
• Throughput had to be carefully balanced: too deep a material stream would hide impurities, too sparse would reduce tonnage.

Hadfield required a solution capable of meeting their operational targets while integrating seamlessly into the existing process.

The Solution

Hadfield approached CRJ Services Ltd for a tailored solution. After detailed discussions, CRJ recommended the Haas Tyron 2000XL 2.0 (7-7/4), featuring a twin shaft configuration capable of producing a consistent particle size at the desired throughput.

Several machines were delivered to site for demonstrations, allowing Hadfield to compare performance and make an informed decision.

Speaking with Steve Greenwood – Remote Sites Manager, he explained: “We chose the Haas Tyron 2000XL 2.0 as it gave the best crushed material and TPH when on demo put against the other machines.”

Customisation to Fit Existing Process

Integrating the Tyron into Hadfield’s existing process presented a challenge. The standard outfeed conveyor of the Tyron 2000XL 2.0 did not reach the second stage overband magnet at the correct height and angle. Additionally, the first overband magnet required modification to expel ferrous metal further from the machine.

CRJ Services collaborated with Haas to develop bespoke solutions: A hydraulically controlled extended outfeed conveyor was designed to fit seamlessly between the Tyron and the second overband magnet.

The overband magnet was extended, ensuring metals collected were expelled the required distance from the machine.

Outcome

With these modifications, the Haas Tyron 2000XL 2.0 now operates efficiently within Hadfield’s multi-stage process, producing a consistent particle size at the required 40 TPH. The enhancements also improve material quality, ease of downstream picking, and operational safety, ensuring Hadfield continues to meet the demands of its high-volume Tilbury facility.
