RTD Crawford Ltd Boosts Wood Recycling with HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0 Pre-Shredder

RTD Crawford Ltd, established in 1978, is a Northern Ireland-based wood processor and recycler. Their Lisbellaw site in County Fermanagh spans 12,500m², producing over 500 different timber profiles.

Crawford’s Belfast facility, located in the heart of the harbour estate, provides fast and convenient access to timber arriving at the docks. Here, they process approximately 250 tonnes of Grade A and 200 tonnes of Grade B waste wood per week, primarily sourced from the transport and manufacturing industries.

Processed Grade A wood is sent to the Lisbellaw sawmill, heat treated, and blended with other sawmill residues. Grade B wood is processed into biomass and supplied as fuel to a power station in County Derry.

The Challenge

Crawfords previously used a mobile slow-speed pre-shredder to reduce the bulk of incoming waste wood before it entered their static HAAS recycling line. However, the aging pre-shredder needed replacing to meet increasing operational demands.

The new machine had to:

• Produce a consistent particle size for further processing
• Match or exceed the throughput of the existing pre-shredder
• Be compact and manoeuvrable for use around their sites and customer locations
• Be economical to run

After evaluating the market, Crawfords consulted CRJ Services for a solution.

The Solution: HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0

CRJ recommended the HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0, a twin-shaft, slow-speed shredder designed for high-performance wood processing. Key features include:

• Throughputs of up to 65tph on waste wood
• Independently driven shafts, allowing greater control over output and the ability to reverse each shaft to prevent material wrapping and blockages
• Crawler tracks and remote control operation, enabling easy manoeuvrability around the site

The Result

Impressed by the reliability of their existing HAAS static recycling system and the excellent service from CRJ and the German manufacturer, RTD Crawford purchased the HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0. The new shredder delivers consistent particle sizes, improved throughput, and operational flexibility, while maintaining economical running costs.

With the TYRON pre-shredder in place, RTD Crawford has strengthened their wood recycling efficiency, supporting both biomass production and sawmill operations, all while maintaining the high standards their customers expect.
