Wastewise Boosts Organic Waste Processing with HAAS TYRON 2000

Biowise Ltd, trading as Wastewise, is a leading waste management company based in East Yorkshire. The company specialises in recovering valuable raw materials from waste while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to its established local authority waste contracts in Yorkshire, Wastewise recently secured a 15-year, £30 million contract with Cheshire East Council to receive and treat food and garden waste at their Crewe facility.

Meeting the Demands of Increased Organic Waste

As part of this new contract, Wastewise designed and built a £7 million state-of-the-art In-Vessel Composting (IVC) facility at Leighton Grange. With additional organic waste processing contracts, the company faced a challenge: their existing shredder could not meet the requirement to process approximately 75,000 tonnes of organic waste annually.

Having previously supplied solutions for Wastewise, CRJ Services was consulted again to provide a tailored solution for their shredding requirements. As the sole UK and Ireland distributor of HAAS Recycling Solutions, CRJ recommended the HAAS TYRON 2000 as the ideal shredder for the facility’s organic waste streams.

Advanced Shredding Technology for Efficiency and Reliability

The HAAS TYRON is a twin-shaft, slow-speed shredder renowned in the waste and recycling sectors for its durability, low running costs, and ease of maintenance. Its twin shafts are independently driven, significantly reducing the likelihood of material wrapping around the shafts and enabling self-cleaning during operation. Unlike traditional single-shaft pre-shredders, this design minimises wear and downtime, ensuring consistent performance throughout high-volume operations.

A key feature for Wastewise was the reduction of time spent clearing blockages. The TYRON’s shafts can reverse automatically when a blockage is detected, attempting to shred the contents multiple times before liberating the material if necessary. This anti-blocking functionality ensures smooth, uninterrupted throughput and reduces manual intervention.

Ease of Maintenance and Safety Improvements

The latest generation of the TYRON 2000 includes foldable side panels, providing direct ground-level access to the shredding chamber. This innovation eliminates the need for anyone to enter the chamber during maintenance or hard-facing, improving safety and operational efficiency. Additionally, access to the hydraulic and engine compartments has been enhanced, making daily checks and servicing quicker and safer for the team.

Delivering Measurable Operational Improvements

Bob Wilkes, Operations and Development Director at Wastewise, commented on the decision to select the TYRON: “Reliability and throughput tonnages were two key factors for us. The anti-blocking feature and dealer support also convinced us to go with the HAAS.”

Since introducing the new TYRON 2000, Wastewise has observed average throughputs of 60 tonnes per hour, representing a 20–30% increase compared to their previous shredder. The consistent particle size has also improved downstream composting efficiency, yielding a higher proportion of the more valuable compost fraction.

“We have been very impressed with the TYRON. We’ve seen improved throughput of material through the reception hall, as well as a better shred of larger items of feedstock, which allows for better composting. There has also been a better split of the more valuable compost fraction at the end of the process, because of a more consistent shred.”
