Angus Council Boosts Green Waste Processing with Haas Tyron 2000XL 2.0

Angus Council, serving a population of 115,000 in Scotland, collects garden and commercial green waste from around 20,000 households every fortnight. At their green waste recycling facility in Forfar, approximately 30,000 tonnes of this material are processed each year. Once shredded, the waste is matured in windrows and then screened through a trommel with a 20mm drum. The final compost product is sold to local farmers and agricultural contractors, and also made available to residents for free.

The Challenge: Aging Equipment and Difficult Materials

The facility’s existing slow-speed shredder was approaching 10 years of service and was increasingly costly to maintain. Frequent blockages and wear on components were impacting throughput and operational efficiency. Over half of the green waste intake came from kerbside collections, which primarily consisted of decomposing grass cuttings—a challenging material to shred. Root balls and other tough organic matter further compounded the issue.

Fuel efficiency was another key consideration for the Council. They required a machine that could handle tough materials while maintaining low operating costs, and significantly reduce downtime caused by blockages.

The Solution: Haas Tyron 2000XL 2.0

Following the tender process, CRJ Services proposed the Haas Tyron 2000XL 2.0, a twin-shaft slow-speed shredder designed to tackle challenging materials efficiently. The Tyron’s independently driven shafts can reverse and automatically detect blockages, attempting to shred the material up to three times before fully reversing to clear the obstruction.

This intelligent anti-blocking system eliminates downtime and, crucially, removes the need for personnel to enter the shredding chamber, making the process safer for operators.

Performance and Flexibility

CRJ visited the facility to review operations with Aiden Devlin, Site Green Waste Controller, who confirmed that the Haas Tyron was performing exceptionally. “Comparing tonnage throughput with our previous shredder, the Haas is shredding almost three times the amount of green waste in the same time frame, while producing a product of equal size and quality,” he said.

One of the features that stood out to Angus Council was the ability to adjust each shaft independently, both in speed and direction, depending on the material being processed. “With one touch of a button, the shredder configuration can be changed to cater to the variety of green waste forms we encounter,” Aiden added. This versatility ensures the shredder is always operating at optimal efficiency.
