GBRS Increases Compost Screening Capacity with Electric Kentek Trommel Solution from CRJ Services

Growing Beds Recycling Services Ltd (GBRS), a leading organic waste recycling provider in Bedfordshire, has significantly increased its compost screening capacity following the installation of a static electric Kentek XD620S trommel plant supplied by CRJ Services Ltd.

Established in 2005, GBRS delivers organic waste recycling services to local authorities, private sector organisations and the general public. The company processes green waste from a wide range of sources, including builders, landscapers and homeowners, converting it into high-quality compost products for agricultural, horticultural and domestic markets.

Managing Growth in Green Waste Volumes

Incoming green waste at the GBRS facility is shredded before being placed onto a block composting system to mature. Throughout the composting cycle, the material is regularly turned using modern windrow turning technology to ensure consistent breakdown and stabilisation.

Once matured, the compost is screened into multiple fraction sizes to meet varying product specifications. However, as the business and site continued to grow, the volume of material being received began to exceed the capacity of the existing screening setup.

GBRS’s previous process relied on two mobile trommel screens, which were increasingly struggling to cope with demand while also contributing to higher fuel consumption and maintenance requirements.

A Simpler, More Cost-Effective Screening Solution

Recognising the need for increased capacity and improved efficiency, GBRS took the opportunity to rethink its screening operation. Mark Evans, Director at Growing Beds Recycling Services, approached CRJ Services Area Sales Manager Mike Symons to discuss a new solution.

With prior experience of the site and a clear understanding of GBRS’s processes, CRJ Services proposed a static electric dual Kentek XD620S trommel plant, complete with an integrated feed hopper. The move to an electric system offered a simpler layout with fewer moving parts, alongside lower energy costs compared to diesel-powered mobile screeners.

Delivering Efficiency and Lower Operating Costs

The installation of the Kentek trommel plant has delivered immediate benefits for GBRS. Increased throughput capacity has allowed significantly higher volumes of compost to be processed, while reduced energy consumption has lowered the overall cost per tonne.

The static design and reduced mechanical complexity have also resulted in lower ongoing maintenance requirements, improving reliability and reducing downtime within the screening operation.

The system is fitted with 10mm and 25mm trommel drums, producing PAS100-accredited compost products that meet the quality standards required by GBRS’s end users.

Supporting Long-Term Compost Production

Following commissioning, the new screening plant has quickly become a central part of GBRS’s composting operation, enabling the business to maintain consistent output as material volumes continue to increase.

The final compost products are sold back into the agricultural, horticultural and domestic compost markets, supporting sustainable waste recycling and material reuse across the region.
