CRJ Services Delivers Efficient C&D Waste Processing Solution for Tom White Waste

Tom White Waste is a family-run waste management business based in Coventry, providing waste solutions to both residential and commercial customers across the region. The company services a wide range of clients, including some of the area’s most prestigious organisations such as the Ricoh Arena and the Jaguar Land Rover factory.

Through its skip hire operation and commercial waste collections, Tom White Waste processes significant volumes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. This material typically consists of mixed soil, hardcore, wood, metal and general waste, requiring effective separation to maximise recycling rates.

Replacing an Ageing Processing Setup

Historically, Tom White Waste processed its C&D material using an ageing trommel and picking station. As material volumes increased and reliability became a concern, the business identified the need for a more efficient and cost-effective processing solution.

Having worked with CRJ Services for several years — including the supply of spare and wear parts for existing machinery — Tom White Waste approached CRJ to discuss a hire-based material processing solution that would improve recovery rates and support its operational objectives.

Designing a Tailored Processing Solution

Mike Symons, Area Sales Manager at CRJ Services, attended site to assess the incoming material streams and understand the operational requirements before presenting a proposed solution to Jonny Lackenby, Site Manager at Tom White Waste.

To maximise material recovery and support the company’s goal of achieving ‘Zero to Landfill’, CRJ proposed a system centred around a Doppstadt SM 518 trommel screener fitted with a 15mm drum. This allows fine material to be removed early in the process, improving the quality of downstream separation.

Maximising Material Recovery Through Manual Picking

The oversize fraction from the trommel is transferred to a Kiverco PS 122 picking station, where a blower removes light material before the remaining waste stream is manually sorted.

The Kiverco PS 122 is a double-sided, two-bay picking station capable of accommodating two 40-yard skips for storing recovered commodities. To support safe and comfortable operation, CRJ’s picking stations are supplied with integrated lighting, heating and a full-length emergency stop cord for immediate belt shutdown if required.

Producing Clean Recycled Aggregates

Following manual picking, the remaining material passes beneath an overband magnet which removes any remaining ferrous metals. This final stage leaves a clean hardcore product suitable for recycling back into the construction industry.

Recovered materials from the picking process are compacted into bales and sent to local reprocessing facilities. Any small volume of non-recyclable material is directed to a local RDF facility, where it is used to generate energy.

By implementing a robust and well-designed processing solution, Tom White Waste has significantly improved its ability to recover valuable materials from its C&D waste stream while reducing reliance on landfill.
