Biffa Enhances Transfer Station Efficiency with HAAS TYRON Shredder from CRJ Services

Biffa, with over 100 years’ experience in waste and recycling management, operates a comprehensive network of depots across the UK, serving more than 95% of UK postcodes. Alongside its material recycling facilities, the company runs multiple transfer stations, which provide temporary storage for municipal solid waste (MSW) before onward transport to larger processing facilities.

To improve operational efficiency and reduce transport costs, Biffa shreds waste at its transfer stations to a sub-300mm product. This not only eases transportation but also ensures the material is ready for processing at the company’s materials recycling facilities.

Meeting High Tonnage Demands at Tipton

At Biffa’s Tipton transfer station in Birmingham, the depot handles over 1,500 tonnes of MSW per week. The operation required a versatile, slow-speed shredder capable of processing up to 30 tonnes per hour consistently over 50 hours each week. Ensuring uptime and reliable performance was therefore a key priority.

Having worked with CRJ Services for over 20 years, Brian Green, Operations Support Manager at Biffa Tipton, approached CRJ for a hire solution. The HAAS TYRON mobile twin-shaft slow-speed shredder was proposed as the ideal machine, offering proven performance, versatility, and ease of maintenance within the waste management sector.

The decision to hire the HAAS TYRON was influenced not only by the machine’s technical capabilities but also by CRJ’s robust support network. With field-based engineers strategically located across the UK and Ireland, CRJ can respond quickly to any operational issues.

A further benefit was CRJ’s unique ‘Swing Program’, which allows long-term hires to be rotated with an identical machine while the original unit is serviced and hard-faced offsite. This ensures consistent performance and minimal disruption throughout the hire period.

Seamless Integration and Training

Upon delivery, CRJ provided the Biffa team with full handover training on safe operation and daily maintenance procedures for the TYRON shredder. Following a successful period in operation, CRJ visited the Tipton site to review the machine’s performance and capture footage of it in action.
